Welcome, you are here : —-> .

10 years of Miloa

Ten years ago, nobody believed I could do it. Worse still, people told me I was a dreamer and that my project would be too difficult to carry off.

Acromegalia

ACROMEGALIA or HYPERSOMATOTROPISM
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
The pituitary gland is a small gland in the brain that produces a series of hormones including growth hormone (in short GH).

Excess GH leads to the development of diabetes mellitus (abnormally high sugar levels in the blood), an increase in the size of certain organs such as the liver and heart, as well as physical changes.

Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea

DID YOU KNOW THAT
The acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome in dogs was previously called “hemorrhagic gastroenteritis”.

American ginseng

PANAX QUINQUEFOLIUS
American ginseng is a perennial plant that is native to North America and grows naturally in mature forests throughout much of the eastern United States, from New England and Minnesota to Louisiana and Georgia. In Canada, the species is found in Ontario and Quebec (CHARRON & GAGNON, 1991).
Shamans have used this herb in traditional medicine since time immemorial and the Chinese have valued its multiple beneficial effects for centuries.

American Wintergreen

GAULTHERIA PROCUMBENS
American Wintergreen, also known as eastern teaberry, or Gaultheria procumbens is a shrub of the Ericaceae family. It is found in the forests of North America, Canada and China. In traditional medicine, wintergreen essential oil obtained from the leaves is highly valued for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

Anti-Ageing

When our pets age, their central nervous system displays a loss of neurons, brain atrophy and a calcification of the meninges (Head, 2001 ; Roudebush & al, 2005). Most of the atrophy occurs in the cortex. There is a correlation between cortical atrophy and cognitive problems (Rofina & al, 2006) in both humans and dogs (Du & al, 2005 ; Ezekiel & al, 2004). Deposits of platelets of amyloid-beta peptides are also observed. These deposits increase with age and are linked to the severity of the cognitive deficiency (Colle & al, 2000). These amyloid-beta platelets are neurotoxic and compromise normal neuron function. There are also a great many vascular and peri-vascular changes. These can restrict blood flow and the supply of essential nutrients (Gerlach & al, 1994 ; Araujo & al, 2002). As the brain ages, it is less able to fight oxidative stress, a cause of neuron malfunction (Kiaipattanasakul & al, 1997 ; Head & al, 2002). All these tissue changes explain the decline of cognitive function, disorientation, memory loss, disturbance of the day/night cycles and withdrawal.

Anti-Ox

New at Miloa! We present Anti-Ox, our first supplement in capsules!

Anti-Ox

Every day the body produces free radicals. This is an integral part of cell, physiological and aerobic metabolism.
Most of these free radicals are formed from the oxygen that helps to produce energy in the mitochondria. They also play a role in the defence against micro-organisms.
When too many are produced, they damage the cell membranes and cause protein and DNA degradation. This leads to the cell death or gene mutations that cause cancers, and promotes ageing and the onset of numerous diseases.
Oxidative stress is linked to a considerable number of pathologies. It is not yet known whether it is the cause or the consequence of conditions such as asthma, diabetes, COPD, chronic renal failure, Crohn’s disease, osteoarthritis, pancreatitis and autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Artichoke

Cynara scolymus, belongs to the Asteraceae family like Milk Thistle or Echinacea. It is a large herbaceous plant, native to southern Europe and northern Africa. Its culture and use in traditional medicine date back to ancient Rome.
Artichoke leaves have always been used for their choleretic, cholagogue, amphocholeretic, diuretic, hepato-protective properties. Today, and particularly in Germany, they are used to fight against hyperlipemia, hypercholesterolemia, digestive disorders, liver and bile diseases. It is an excellent appetite stimulant. It should not be used in patients suffering from gallstones.

Asian ginseng

Panax ginseng
Ginseng belongs to the Araliaceae family and is native to China and Korea. The root has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as a tonic for any deficiency of qi, the vital life force.
It is a popular and widely used plant: in 2003 it was estimated that more than six million Americans regularly consumed ginseng products (RADAD & al, 2006).

BAOS

BRACHYCEPHALIC AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION SYNDROME or BAOS or SORB
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Brachycephalic airway syndrome is also known by the abbreviations SORB (Syndrome Obstructif Respiratoire des Brachycéphales) or BAOS (Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome). Brachycephalic means « short head ».
One talks about a syndrome because it is an association of anomalies that together form an entity that characterizes this pathology.

Barking

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Barking is normal canine behaviour, but it can become inappropriate (if it happens too often and is persistent) or may be a symptom of a behavioural problem. In this case, barking is accompanied by other symptoms, which together indicate a behavioural or psychiatric disorder.

Bergamot

CITRUS BERGAMIA
Bergamot is the fruit of the bergamot tree, a tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. It looks like a small orange with green color when immature and yellow when ripe. This fruit is mainly grown in Calabria, Italy. Very popular in gastronomy, bergamot subtly flavors the fish and shellfish dishes of great chefs, gives a unique taste to Earl Gray tea and to madeleines from Commercy. It is also the base ingredient of the eau de cologne.

In phytotherapy, the whole fruit, the juice and the peel of the fruit are used, as well as the essential oil of the peel.

Bilberry

VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS
Bilberry (known as blueberry in the US) is a shrub that belongs to the Ericaceae family and is found in the forests of Europe and western Asia. It is grown mainly for its berries, but its leaves are also used in herbal medicine.

Blackcurrant

RIBES NIGRUM
Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum), also known as cassis, belongs to the Grossulariaceae family. Grown for its berries, this dense, bushy shrub reaches a height of 1 m to 1.5 m.

It is native to central Europe and northern Asia, with Europe accounting for 80% of global blackcurrant production. In the Middle Ages, blackcurrant was prized for its therapeutic properties, particularly as a treatment for gout. Today, the leaves, berries and buds are used in herbal medicine.

Bladder wrack

FUCUS VESICULOSUS
Bladder Wrack or Black tang, Fucus vesiculosus, is a very common brown algae found in cold and temperate waters of coastal and sublittoral regions along the rocky coasts of the northern hemisphere (Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Channel, North Sea and Baltic Sea) (CATARINO & al., 2018).

It is part of the Fucaceae family. It grows half of its time out of the water. It is therefore subject to strong variations in temperature and salinity. It carries airy vesicles or floats called aerocysts which allow it to maintain a certain buoyancy to capture light while remaining attached to its substrate.

blond psyllium

PLANTAGO OVATA ou ISPAGHUL
Psyllium was used by the ancient Egyptians for its laxative properties more than 3,000 years ago. Its seeds are harvested from several plants in the Plantaginaceae family, such as Plantago ovata (blond psyllium), which is the most useful for medicinal purposes, Plantago afra and Plantago arenaria (black psyllium). These compact annual herbs with erect stems are mainly grown in India and Iran (blond psyllium), as well as in the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East (black psyllium). The name psyllium comes from the Greek psyllia, meaning “flea”, referring to the small size of the seeds.

It is the seeds that are used in herbal medicine. They are very high in mucilage, a polysaccharide that can absorb up to eight times its volume in water. Mucilage is the main active constituent of the psyllium seed coat (also called the husk or integument), which contains between 20 and 30%.

Canine valve disease

CANINE VALVE DISEASE
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Canine degenerative valve disease is a serious and very common cardiac disease. As the name suggests, it is caused by deterioration of one or more heart valves. About a third of dogs over the age of 10 and 75% of dogs older than 16 have some form of heart disease
The heart is divided into four chambers. The right side of the heart receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it into the lungs where it becomes oxygenated; the left side of the heart receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it throughout the body.
The two sides of the heart are separated by a dividing wall of muscle called the septum. The upper and lower chambers of the heart (the atria and ventricles, respectively) are connected by orifices, or valves. These two “atrioventricular” valves are one-way and should close properly.
This prevents blood flowing back through the system when the heart contracts. The valve between the right atrium and right ventricle is called the tricuspid valve and the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle is called the mitral valve. The heart also has two “semilunar” valves that separate the right and left ventricles from the pulmonary artery and aorta (respectively the pulmonary and aortic valves).

Cardio Supp

The heart is located in the thorax. Acting as a pump, it contracts rhythmically to transport the blood around the body. It is a hollow muscle comprising four cavities. There is a right heart and a left heart, separated by a wall called the septum. Each of these sides is divided into two, with the atria at the top and the ventricles below, separated by valves. The right (tricuspid) valve and the left (mitral) value open and close during contractions.
The right heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and sends it to the lungs for oxygenation. The left heart receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to all parts of the body. For this reason, it is more developed than the right heart.

Chinese cinnamon

CINNAMOMUM CASSIA
Chinese cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia, is a spice derived from the inner bark of the cinnamon tree, a tree of the Lauraceae family. The cinnamon tree can reach 15 m in height. It does not support temperatures below 15 degrees. It is only found in tropical regions. Cinnamon is widely used in perfumery and to flavor dishes, in association with turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, cloves or cardamom.
It is imported from the Orient and has been used for almost 4,000 years. The Chinese cinnamon is the oldest species listed. We find the trace of its therapeutic use in the Chinese pharmacopoeia written 2,700 years ago as well as in the Bible. It is also very important in Ayurvedic medicine. To obtain Chinese cinnamon essential oil, the leafy twig is distilled.

Chlorella

CHLORELLA VULGARIS
Chlorella is a green single-celled microalga belonging to the Chlorellaceae family, and grows naturally in freshwater lakes and streams.

Clove

SYZYGIUM AROMATICUM
The Clove or Clove Syzygium aromaticum is part of the Myrtaceae family. They are native to Indonesia and can reach 20 meters in height under natural conditions. Their flowers are tubular, pink in color and button-shaped. They open on a feather duster of white stamens. Flower buds are harvested before they hatch to produce cloves.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

UBIQUINONE
A coenzyme is the non-protein part of an enzyme, bound to the enzyme and essential for its proper functioning. CoQ10 is a vital element of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and plays a key role in energy metabolism.
CoQ10 was discovered in the US in 1957, but it was Japanese scientists who first reported its therapeutic properties. Since the 1970s it has been an approved treatment for congestive heart failure in Japan, where it is obtained by fermenting beets with specific yeasts.

Constipation

WHAT IS PERIODONTAL CONSTIPATION?
Constipation is a clinical symptom, not an illness. Patients present with bowel movements that are too infrequent, stools that are too hard and dry, pain or frequent urges to pass stools (tenesmus). The absence of defecation leads to retention of stools, which become impacted and dehydrated.
All breeds, whatever their age or sex, can be affected by constipation. French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Manx cats are prone to it, most likely due to lumbosacral malformation. German Shepherds are prone to anal fistulas, which can lead to painful defecation (dyschezia), resulting in constipation. As they get older, unneutered males may develop prostatic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement), which is a common cause of constipation.

Curcuma

FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE HOSPITAL, WHERE, HOW AND WHY A SPICE HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING AND STUDIED ASSETS IN THE WORLD!
Curcuma is a perennial rhizomatous herbaceous plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. It comes from South East Asia. In India, this sacred spice, obtained from crushed rhizomes, has been used for its many virtues for more than 4.000 years.
Its active ingredient is curcumin or diferuloylmethane, orange yellow pigment, which gives it its characteristic colour. Curcuma goes into the composition of curry.

Cushing

CUSHING or HYPERADRENOCORTICISM'S DISEASE
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Hyperadrenocorticism, or Cushing's syndrome, results from a chronic excess of glucocorticoids (cortisone and cortisol), a class of steroid hormones produced naturally in the body. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed endocrine diseases in dogs. It strikes on average 1% of dogs but is very rare in cats.
Within the pituitary gland (a small gland in the brain), a hormone called adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) is normally secreted to stimulate the adrenal glands (glands near the kidneys) to produce glucocorticoids. These hormones perform multiple important tasks within the metabolism. They are anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, analgesic, lower immune defenses, increase carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism in particular.

Diabetes mellitus

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
An animal with diabetes mellitus has a blood sugar level that is constantly too high. That is what is called hyperglycaemia. Part of this excess sugar is excreted via the urine. The patient thus has glycosuria; its urine is very sticky. Diabetes mellitus is a frequent endocrine disease in dogs and cats.
In healthy animals, the insulin produced by the pancreas regulates the levels of sugar in the blood that enters the cells. In diabetic animals, either the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin or the insulin works poorly.

Digest Regul

The intestine is part of the digestive tract. It plays a key role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. It comprises two parts: the small intestine and the large intestine. Nutrients pass through the intestine on their way to the blood and the rest of the body. The mucous membrane of the small intestine is covered in folds and villi to increase its surface area and allow for a large number of exchanges with the circulatory system. It forms a barrier to prevent pathogens entering. Its lumen contains microbiota, which is made up of bacteria and other micro-organisms. The lymphoid tissue associated with the digestive tract is the main immune system support. It protects the body from invasions and is also where the B and T lymphocytes are stored.

Bacteria in the large intestine break down the molecules that cannot be absorbed in the small intestine, fibre for instance. The large intestine is also where vitamins B and K are synthesised.

Dirty

DEAR DOCTOR, MY CAT IS PEEING EVERYWHERE!
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
What causes cats to do their business in places other than the designated areas (litter tray or in the garden)?
The first piece of advice for owners is to OBSERVE YOUR PET. You need to examine the cat’s attitude and the position it adopts when relieving itself to try and better understand the reason for this very unpleasant behaviour.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a plant native to North America. Native Americans have been using it to treat snake wounds and bites since ancient times.
It was in 1800 that it appeared in western medical practices. It is part of the Asteraceae family. The entire plant is used: root, leaves and upper parts.

Elderberry

SAMBUCUS NIGRA
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra), also known as black or European elder, belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family and is a shrub with compound leaves and small black berries full of dark purple juice. It grows in Europe, Central Asia, America and North Africa, and is known to have antimicrobial and antiviral effects.
It also has anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering properties, as well as potent antioxidant activity. The flower heads and fruit are used in herbal medicine.
Elderberry is one of the world’s most popular medicinal plants.
Historical applications include use as a painkiller, anti-inflammatory, diuretic and expectorant. Native Americans used it to treat infections, coughs and skin conditions. When mixed with other ingredients, it has been used as a gargle for coughs, head colds, laryngitis, influenza-like symptoms and shortness of breath(ULBRICHT & al., 2014).

Energy Supp

Dogs are becoming increasingly active. Some breeds, like the Newfoundland, like to swim, while others run, race, hunt or take part in activities like canicross and French ring.
Disciplines such as agility, sled pulling and obedience are gaining in popularity. And let’s not forget the police and army dogs and those who help in disasters.
These active animals have specific needs, as unfortunately do pets that are convalescing after major surgery or receiving palliative care.

ESOPHAGEAL ACHALASIA

DID YOU KNOW THAT:
The esophagus is the part of the digestive tract that lies between the oral cavity and the stomach. It is the place of transit of food which advances towards the stomach thanks to the contractions of its muscles.

In the event of a decrease in muscle tone, the esophagus no longer contracts effectively and dilates; this is called esophageal achalasia. The esophagus loses its ability to actively transport food, water and saliva to the stomach. These will stagnate in the esophagus or even be regurgitated.

The esophageal achalasia should not be confused with the esophageal crop caused by various obstructive causes that lead to a narrowing of the lumen of the organ. The part of the esophagus that is upstream of this narrowing expands, forming a crop. These obstructive causes are the persistence of the 4th aortic arch, or tumors for example.

Dogs are more commonly affected by esophageal achalasia than cats.

ESOPHAGITIS

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
The esophagus is the part of the digestive tract that lies between the mouth and the stomach. Food passes through it thanks to muscle contractions.
Esophagitis is an inflammation of the lining of the esophagus.

Eucalyptus radiata and globulus

EUCALYPTUS GLOBULUS & EUCALYPTUS RADIATA
Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia. There are over 600 different species with varying chemical compositions. Very resistant and easily adapting to different environments, they have been introduced to the subtropics of Asia and the Mediterranean basin. They are part of the Myrtaceae family. Their wood is of high quality and they dry out the soil, thus promoting the fight against malaria. They were discovered in the 18th century in Tasmania.

The best-known species, Eucalyptus Globulus, has been nicknamed “fever tree” by the Aborigines, who have used it to fight fever and infections for millennia. Massive commercial production of Eucalyptus essential oil began in the mid-19th century in Australia.

EVSO

Miloa supports the General Assembly of the European Veterinary Society for Osteopathy (EVSO)…

Feline coryza

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Feline coryza, or rhinotracheitis, is an upper respiratory infection affecting cats. It is one of the most common reasons for seeking veterinary care in feline medicine and a source of major concern due to the emergence of what are known as hypervirulent forms.

Figs

FICUS CARICA
Figs grow on a fruit tree called the fig tree or Ficus carica. It is native to the Middle East and the Mediterranean. It belongs to the Moraceae family.

Fish oil

Many doctors and vets worldwide recommend that their patients take fish oil-based dietary supplements, which are known to have beneficial effects on health, especially in cardiovascular medicine and dermatology.
Fish oils are of particular interest, as they are an excellent source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the main omega-3 fatty acids. Rich sources of these include cold-water oily fish (e.g. salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines). Omega-3 are a group of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, “essential” meaning that they must be supplied in the diet.

Flex Miloa

Flex Miloa™ is a massage oil for sports preparation and recovery before and after exercise.
Flex Miloa™ prevents and relieves muscle tension. It improves the suppleness and flexibility of movements. Flex Miloa™ relaxes and soothes muscles and joints.

FPLV / CPV

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Canine parvovirus (CPV) and feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV) – the latter more commonly known as feline parvovirus (FPV) or feline parvo – are severe, highly contagious infections that mainly affect young animals and are characterised by vomiting and bloody, foul-smelling diarrhoea.
They are caused by two closely related viruses, specifically parvoviruses (CPV 2a, b and c in dogs and FPV in cats).

Gastro Supp

More and more pets are suffering from acid reflux and stomach cramps which cause significant digestive discomfort and pain.
The exclusive formula of Gastro Supp™, rich in 8 unique ingredients, supports sensitive stomachs and improves living comfort.
Fucus vesiculosus alginates and mastiha line the stomach wall. German chamomile and licorice protect the stomach. Calcium-rich lithothamnium reduces acidity and ginger is anti-emetic.

GDV

GASTRIC DILATATION VOLVULUS IN DOGS
DID YOU KNOW THAT:
Gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV – Stomach dilatation-torsion syndrome) is an acute disease characterized by severe distension of the stomach followed by a change in position of the stomach. The stomach twists around its axis which prevents the evacuation of air or liquid which remain trapped and accumulate.

The stomach expands more and more and takes up so much space in the abdomen that it compresses the vessels that transfer blood back to the heart. This leads to a state of shock which puts the dog's life in danger and requires urgent treatment.

Geranium

PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS
Pelargonium graveolens (P.G.) or geranium rosat is part of the Geraniaceae family. It is a shrub that can reach over 1 meter in height. It is native to South Africa like 71% of the wild pelargoniums listed. We must distinguish between geraniums and pelargoniums. Geraniums are often herbaceous plants distributed in temperate regions and the northern hemisphere. Their flowers are regular and all the petals have a similar shape and size while those of pelargoniums are irregular: 2 upper ones which differ from the 3 lower ones. Pelargoniums appreciate coastal slopes exposed to the sun and a Mediterranean-type climate and do not tolerate frost unlike geraniums. They are the delight of gardening enthusiasts, there are no less than 16,000 different cultivated varieties. P.G. has been hybridized and there are many cultivars (Egypt, Reunion Island, China) whose composition and therefore their virtues differ.

German Chamomile

MATRICARIA RECUTITA or CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA
Matricaria Chamomile or German Chamomile is an annual plant measuring a few centimeters up to 1 meter. Chamomile is originally from Europe. It is part of the Asteraceae family. Its benefits have been known since ancient times.

Ginger

ZINGIBER OFFICINALE
It is a native plant of India. Ginger is part of the Zingiberaceae family (like Curcuma longa). It has been used for thousands of years around the world, both as a condiment and for its medicinal virtues. It is mainly used to treat digestive disorders.
Europe approves its use in the prevention of vomiting (antiemetic) and to treat dyspepsia.

Ginkgo

GINKGO BILOBA
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), also known as the maidenhair tree, is the only surviving member of the Ginkgoaceae family, which predates the dinosaurs by forty million years. The tree is therefore regarded as a living fossil.
The leaves are used in herbal medicine. It has exceptional longevity, living for up to a thousand years. It is remarkably resilient: one specimen even survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Glossary Deseases

New section on our web site…

Grapefruit

CITRUS MAXIMA and CITRUS X PARADISI
The term “grapefruit” generates great confusion. Indeed, the term grapefruit defines 2 trees and 2 fruits of different species (Citrus maxima and its hybrid Citrus x paradisi) of the Citrus genus of the Rutaceae family. Depending on the times, world regions and languages, the term “pomelo” or “grapefruit” is used to describe the same fruit. To avoid misunderstandings and amalgams between the 2, we use the latin names. Citrus maxima is native to South East Asia, its peel is very thick, greenish, yellow or pink. Its texture is crunchy and slightly juicy. Citrus x paradisi is an American hybrid between C.maxima and C. sinensis. Its peel is thin yellow or pink. This fruit grows in clusters, hence its English name “grapefuit” and its texture is very juicy.

Green Tea

CAMELIA SINENSIS
The tea tree is a persistent leaf shrub of the theaceae family. Its leaves have been used for its medicinal properties for more than 5,000 years.
Tea is the second most consumed drink in the world after water.
The different teas are obtained thanks to the fermentation of the leaves; this fermentation lasts only a few seconds to a few minutes for green tea while it can last several hours for black tea. The longer the fermentation the longer the molecules in the leaves will oxidize. This is why green tea is the most interesting from a therapeutic point of view, and more particularly Japan’s green tea.

Green-lipped mussel

PERNA CANALICULUS
Perna canaliculus or green-lipped mussel (GLM) is found only in New Zealand waters. It has been cultivated commercially since the early 1970s (WOOD & al., 2007)), but has been valued as a delicious and nutritious foodstuff by native New Zealanders since the dawn of history.

Harpagophytum

HARPAGOPHYTUM PROCUMBENS
Harpagophytum procumbens is a member of the sesame family (Pedaliaceae). It is commonly called “Devil’s Claw” because its fruit is covered with thorny barbs.
When goats walk on these, they become stuck in their hooves. To get rid of them, the animals caper about and shake their legs in all directions. This “wild dance” led the Bushmen to believe that the goats were under the influence of the devil. These indigenous peoples of Southern Africa, among them the Bantu, have used this herbal remedy since ancient times to relieve rheumatic pain and digestive disorders. The plant was first collected and described by western scientists in 1820 but it was not until 1907 that a German publicised its anti-inflammatory properties.
Harpagophytum is a ground-trailing perennial plant that grows very slowly in the desert. It is mainly found in Namibia.
In herbal medicine, the secondary root tubers are cut into slices and dried before use. Over-harvesting of this extraordinary plant has almost caused it to die out. It is therefore crucial to use it wisely and ensure that its origin is sustainable.

Hepa supp

The liver fulfils a great many functions in the body. It stores, metabolises and synthesises a large number of essential substances and eliminates toxins. It is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids (including cholesterol). It secretes bile, transport proteins such as albumin, and coagulation factors.

It stores vitamins A, D, K, E and B2, iron and copper. It converts the inactive form of vitamin D into the active form. It converts ammonia produced by the digestive tract into urea. It breaks down and destroys toxins and drugs. It “orchestrates” the body’s whole metabolism.

HS-HA

HYPERSENSITIVITY-HYPERACTIVITY SYNDROME
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Hypersensitivity-hyperactivity syndrome (HS-HA) in dogs is often compared to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. It is a behavioural disorder associated with a lack of inhibition.

Affected dogs are hypersensitive, reacting to even the slightest stimulus: a passing fly, someone crossing their leg, a sneeze, etc. Dogs with HS-HA are hyperactive, i.e. constantly moving and hyperkinetic, their owners often describing them as clumsy, rough, tireless or unmanageable. They behave like three-month-old puppies, as they have not learned the « rules of good behaviour ».

Hyperthyroidism

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Hyperthyroidism is a disease of the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck, on either side of the trachea. It is the most frequent endocrine disease in elderly cats. The average age of affected cats is 13 years. There is no breed or sexual predisposition.
The hyperthyroidism is caused by over-secretion of thyroid hormones. These hormones are involved in the body’s general metabolism and body temperature regulation. If the thyroid secretes an overabundance of hormones, the animal’s metabolism goes into overdrive. Hyperthyroidism is usually caused by nodules on the gland.
They are difficult to locate accurately because the thyroid extends along the trachea and can be found in various locations. Thyroid tissue has been found scattered in the thorax, for example, especially along the mediastinum.

hypoadrenocorticism

HYPOADRENOCORTICISM or ADDISON'S DISEASE
DID YOU KNOW THAT:
The adrenal glands (small glands located above the kidneys) naturally produce and secrete different hormones such as glucocorticoids (cortisol and cortisone), mineralocorticoids (aldosterone), catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) and sex hormones (androgens, estrogens). These hormones are involved in a whole host of different vital functions within the body.
Addison's disease, or hypoadrenocorticism or adrenal insufficiency, is caused by a lack of glucocorticoid production with or without a lack of mineralocorticoid production.

  • Glucocorticoids have an action on the metabolism of sugars, proteins and fats. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, among other things ;
  • Mineralocorticoids are involved in the regulation of blood pressure and are essential for maintaining the balance of sodium, potassium and water in the body.

IBD

CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE or IBD
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Various terms define the same disease: IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), chronic inflammatory enteropathy.
The wall of the intestine is made up of different layers. An outer layer of muscles mixes and moves food through the digestive tract. An inner layer in contact with food is where nutrients are absorbed. In the case of inflammatory bowel disease, cells involved in inflammation and immune response build up abnormally within these layers. This disrupts the mixing and advancement of food as well as its absorption.
All areas of the digestive tract can be affected by this disease.

IMHA

IMMUNE-MEDIATED HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA or IMHA
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Anemia means that the level of red blood cells is abnormally low. The main function of red blood cells is the transport of oxygen to the different tissues of the body. If the patient is anemic, his tissues are insufficiently oxygenated.

Hemolytic anemia means that low red blood cell counts are caused by the destruction (lysis) of red blood cells. And finally the term “immune-mediated” indicates that it is the immune system which is at the origin of the destruction of red blood cells.

When the immune system functions normally, it is able to recognize “bad” elements that need to be destroyed, such as during an infection. In the case of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), the immune system mistakenly categorizes healthy red blood cells as elements that must be destroyed to protect the body.

Immortelle

HELICHRYSUM ITALICUM
The immortelle, Italian strawflower or curry plant, Italian Helichrysum or Helichrysum italicum, is a perennial plant belonging to the Astéraceae family. Helichrysum comes from 2 Greek words: hélios, the sun and chrysos, gold. Its leaves have a silver color and its flowers are golden yellow, they are harvested when the sun is at its zenith during the summer.
They grow in small bushes 40 to 60 cm high. Rare and protected in some places, the immortelle is present in its natural state all around the Mediterranean. It likes limestone and rocky soils. It owes its name to the fact that its yellow flowers can be kept for a very long time without fading once dried, keeping the brilliance of their color. The essential oil is obtained from the flowering tops: 1 ton of flowers gives only 2 kg of essential oil. Known since Antiquity, its virtues were long forgotten to be rediscovered a few decades ago.

Immune Supp

Mammals have an extremely sophisticated immune system that has evolved over time. They need this immune system to survive and adapt to their environment. They need this immune system to survive and adapt to their environment. It protects the body from external attack and also plays a part in allergies, neoplastic processes and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
The immune system has three lines of defence: physical barriers (the skin and the respiratory, digestive and urinary mucosa), innate or non-specific immunity (macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer (NK) cells and polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs)) and specific immunity (T and B lymphocytes). Unfortunately, the immune system does not always respond as it should.
It may be deficient or compromised in older animals or animals with immunodepression, diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypercorticism, FIV or FeLV.
This can also occur in young animals that are not yet immunocompetent. In some cases, it really does need a helping hand to cope with, for example, coryza, leishmaniasis, toxoplasmosis, piroplasmosis, pneumonia and pericarditis.
Finally, neoplasms and chemotherapy are tough on the immune system and the whole body, which will need effective support.

Insulinoma

DID YOU KNOW THAT
The pancreas is an organ located in the abdomen, close to the stomach and the liver. Its function is twofold: the regulation of blood sugar levels thanks to insulin secretion and the digestion of fats and proteins thanks to the secretion of specific enzymes.

Insulin is produced by pancreatic cells called β islets of Langerhans. When blood sugar is high, after a meal for example, insulin is secreted by these cells. This allows sugars to enter the cells of the body and subsequently be used as a source of energy. Sugars are the almost exclusive fuel for neurons and muscles during intense efforts.

Thanks to this mechanism, the level of sugars in the blood does not remain high. Indeed, a consistently high blood sugar level is toxic to many organs and leads to diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, when blood sugar is low, the pancreas does not secrete insulin in a healthy individual.

Lavander

Lavender officinalis – LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA
The genus Lavandula includes species belonging to the Lamiaceae family. This name comes from the Latin lavare, which means “to wash”, due to its use as an antiseptic and disinfectant since antiquity among the ancient Arabs, Greeks and Romans (DENNER, 2009). Among the different species, we find lavender officinalis (also called true lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula officinalis, or Lavandula vera).

Aspic lavender – LAVANDULA LATIFOLIA
Aspic lavender or Lavandula latifolia is another species of lavender. Its name is inspired by that of the asp viper whose bite it is reputed to treat. Indeed, Aspic lavender essential oil has been known for many years for its soothing, regenerating and healing properties (SHIMIZU & al., 1990 ; CAVANAGH & WILKINSON, 2002). It is a plant that grows at a lower altitude of 600 meters, while lavender officinalis grows from 800 meters and up to 2,000 meters of altitude. Its flowering occurs later than lavender officinalis (GARZOLI & al., 2019).

As for lavandin, it is a natural hybrid born from the reproduction between lavender officinalis and aspic lavender (LESAGE-MEESSEN & al., 2015). Lavandin is found between 200 and 800-1,000 meters above sea level (GARZOLI & al., 2019). Information about lavandin can be found in the specific technical sheet for this active ingredient. Here

Lavandin

LAVANDULA X BURNATII
Lavandin is a natural hybrid resulting from the reproduction between Lavender officinalis (also called True Lavender, Lavendula officinalis or Lavendula vera) and Aspic Lavender (Lavandula spica or Lavandula latifolia cineolifera). It was discovered in the 1920s and is part of the Lamiaceae family. The Lavandin cannot reproduce naturally alone: it requires cuttings. The world production of Lavandin essential oil is about 1,000 tons per year. France accounts for 90% of production spread over 16,000 ha located mainly in the South-East region of the Provence (LESAGE-MEESSEN & al., 2015).

The Lavandin is found between 200 and 800-1,000 meters of altitude while the Lavender officinalis grows from 800 meters and beyond. Its flowers are purplish blue in color and very fragrant. Lavandin is larger than true Lavender and is highly valued for its high yield of essential oils (GARZOLI & al., 2019). It is widely used worldwide by the fragrance industry. It is a common ingredient in soaps and skincare (GARZOLI & al., 2019).

Mobility Supp

Joint cartilages act like shock absorbers. Found between two hard bones, they prevent friction and lesions, which would be inevitable if they were not there. Water molecules make up 80 % of the cartilage. These are contained in a network of 15 % interwoven fibres, which form the structure, and 5 % chondrocytes, the active cells of the cartilage.
The chondrocytes regulate synthesis and degradation inside the cartilage to keep the tissue healthy. Cartilage contains very few vessels, making healing difficult. When the joint is put under pressure, the water leaves the network, reducing the thickness of the cartilage. When the joint is returned to the resting state, the water returns.
Mechanical or biological events disrupt the balance of the degradation and synthesis of the articular chondrocytes, leading to morphological, biochemical, molecular and biomechanical changes that cause fibrillation, ulceration and a loss of joint cartilage, sclerosis of the subchondral bone and osteophyte production. These lesions cause limping, pain and restricted movement.

Omega 3

Omega-3 are a group of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, “essential” meaning that they must be supplied in the diet.
The three main omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Omega Supp

Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are essential because they are required for the body to function properly, but cannot be synthesised by the body. This means that they must be supplied in the diet.
Omega-3 fatty acids have a number of vital functions in the immune system, inflammation, reproduction, growth, skin and coat health, the heart, kidneys, joints etc. They are needed from foetal development right through to the ageing process in older animals.
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are precursors of a group of mediators of inflammation and immunity, the eicosanoids. Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, and omega 6 pro-inflammatory. The chain of production for omega-6 fatty acids uses the same enzymes as that for omega-3. Consequently, there is competition for these enzymes between omega-3 and omega-6.
In both dogs and cats, the ideal ratio is considered to be five times as much omega-6 as omega-3. In practice, in the case of both humans with a Western diet and pets with kibble, their plates and bowls are often very imbalanced and contain far too much omega-6 (commonly 15/1 or even 20/1!). This promotes a pro-inflammatory state and increases the risk of certain diseases.
With some diseases (renal or cardiac), the recommended ratio is 1/1, i.e. the same amount of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Pancreatitis in dog

DID YOU KNOW THAt
The pancreas is an organ located near the liver. It has two major functions:

  • Function 1: to produce enzymes for food digestion ;
  • Function 2: to produce hormones for blood sugar level regulation.

Pancreatitis means inflammation of the pancreas. Pancreatitis can be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (evolving over a long period). There are links between these two forms of the disease. On the one hand, dogs with chronic pancreatitis can experience episodes of acute pancreatitis, and on the other hand, repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis can lead to chronic pancreatitis.

In the case of chronic pancreatitis, the lesions progress over time and can irreversibly alter the function of the pancreas. This can lead to pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (in case of impaired function 1) or diabetes mellitus (in case of impaired function 2).

Passionflower

PASSIFLORA INCARNATA
Passiflora incarnata (purple passionflower or maypop) is a member of the Passifloraceae family. It is a climbing vine native to North and South America.
The passionflower gets its name from the fact that each part of the plant recalls the Passion of Christ: the tendrils recall the whip, the three-pointed flowers recall the spear, and the three styles (pistil stalks) recall the nails.
It has been used for years to treat insomnia, anxiety, epilepsy, and asthma and the symptoms of tobacco and opioid withdrawal. The dried aerial parts are used.

PEI

EXOCRINE PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY
DID YOU KNOW THAT:
The pancreas is an organ located near the liver. It has two major functions:

  • Function 1: to produce enzymes for food digestions ;
  • Function 2: to produce hormones for blood sugar level regulation.

During pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (abbreviation PEI) it is the first function that is altered. The pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest food. Without these enzymes, the digestive system is not able to break down food (i.e. digest it) so that it can be absorbed and used by the body. The individual then suffers from malabsorption.

Thyme

THYMUS VULGARIS
Linalool-rich thyme. Thyme or Thymus vulgaris is a sub-shrub of the Lamiaceae family, like mint, lavender, lemon balm and oregano. It is found in the wild all around the Mediterranean and is cultivated all over the world. It appreciates rocky soils and sunshine. It has been used for centuries for its healing properties.

In fact, since ancient times, it was burned to clean the air, perfume the water and ward off pathogens. Its name comes from the Egyptian tham a plant used to embalm the body and from the Greek root thy meaning to exhale an odor. Thyme essential oil is one of the most recommended and used remedies for respiratory ailments and coughs. The German Commission E recognizes its effectiveness in the treatment of bronchitis, whooping cough and inflammation of the respiratory tract. The EMA (European Medicines Agency) has ruled that by virtue of thyme’s ancestral use, thyme preparations may be indicated during productive coughs in the context of a cold.

Thymian

THYMUS VULGARIS
Linalool-reicher Thymian.

TRACHEAL COLLAPSUS

TRACHEAL COLLAPSUS IN DOGS
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
When a dog inhales, through the nose or oral cavity, the air passes through a tube called the “trachea” to reach the lungs. The trachea is held open by rings of cartilage.

In the event of tracheal collapse, the cartilage rings collapse and the tube flattens, which leads to a reduction in the diameter of the tracheal lumen. There are 4 grades: grade 1 results in a slight collapse which gradually worsens until grade 4 where the trachea is completely flattened and the walls touch each other.

Vitamin E

The term “vitamin” was coined in 1912, though the effects of vitamin deficiency, such as scurvy (resulting from a lack of vitamin C), were first recorded in around 1150 BC. Vitamin E is not actually a vitamin but a compound with vitamin activity. It is chemically identical to a vitamin, but can have different physiological effects because it exists in different forms, or isomers.

young pet introduction

HOW DO I INTRODUCE MY NEW PET TO MY RESIDENT PET?
The best solution is to choose very young animals. It’s fairly easy to introduce a puppy to a kitten, or two puppies and two kittens, and have them live together harmoniously. It’s more complicated with adult animals.

Your feed supplement tablets are big. How do I get my pet to take them?

Zen Supp

There are many causes of stress and anxiety in our pets.
They may have to be left alone or be required to adapt to new people or a new environment (holidays, kennels, house move, etc.).
They may also find it difficult to cope with convalescence, weaning, visits to the vet or doggy centre, travel, fireworks or storms.
